A RURAL TOWN::
Settled in the 1840's by pastoralists, Goondiwindi is rapidly becoming one of the major centres in Southern Queensland. Goondiwindi's name stems from Aboriginal origin, meaning 'Resting Place of the Birds' and is pronounced Gun-da-windi.
Goondiwindi is establishing itself as a sought after stop-over destination for visitors Australia wide. The town boasts beautiful tree-lined streets, well kept gardens and the Macintyre River, whose beauty is one of our greatest assets. The surrounding Waggamba Shire has much to offer to residents and visitors.

LOCATION::
Goondiwindi is about 368 kilometres from Brisbane near
the Queensland - New South Wales Border. The Newell Highway also runs through Goondiwindi and is described as the gateway to the Western Downs.
Goondiwindi is the commercial hub of a vast agricultural and pastoral sector which produces cotton, grain, wool, beef, lamb and pork for domestic and overseas markets, while Waggamba Shire is one of Australia's premier primary production regions.
ECONOMY::
Agricultural production is the mainstay of the local economy and earns much needed export income for Australia. The secret of Goondiwindi’s success is its diversification with a combination of farming and grazing practices being by far the most common system of rural enterprise in the area.
Major rural products include wheat, cotton, beef and wool. Major industries include service industries and machinery sales and repairs. Goondiwindi is also home to one of the largest cotton gins in the world and tours are available.

Racing fans will know Goondiwindi as the home of the famous Gunsynd racehorse, affectionately nicknamed the 'Goondiwindi Grey'.

CROPS::
Wheat growing only became significant in the Goondiwindi district in the 1950’s. New improved varieties and farming methods have lifted yields considerably since then, with the area now being one of the largest producers of what in the state and it is home to one of the biggest wheat receival depots in the Southern Hemisphere. The stacks are worth seeing as up to 3000,000 tonnes of grain can be stored during harvest.
Substantial quantities of oats, barley, sorghum, chickpeas and soybeans are also produced.
LIVESTOCK::
There is extensive cattle grazing in the area with feedlots becoming anincreasingly popular way of fattening cattle. Cattle sales, conducted weekly at Goondiwindi, are popular with southern buyers in search of quality beef.
Sheep have been raised in the Goondiwindi area since the first settlers arrived here in the 1840’s. Goondiwindi is now highly regarded as a sheep breeding, fattening and wool producing area.
COTTON::
Cotton growing has really taken off in Goondiwindi since the 1970's. Today up to 80,000 ha of cotton is grown, worth over $350 million to the Macintyre Valley alone, With merely 100 growers, cotton is one of the largest contributors to our economy .
