Travel Diary | A Weekend in Tenterfield

Nothing says a weekend in the country, quite like a trip to Tenterfield. Windswept rolling hills, a drop in the temperature and of course, the magic of Autumn leaves. The once sleepy home of the beloved Peter Allen, is now a bustling destination for tourists and those seeking creative respite, in large part, thanks to 'the Annabelle effect'.

Our adventure was recently marked by the launch of Annabelle Hickson's second book, Galah - Stories of Life Outside the City. A compilation of Annabelle's favourite stories and images from Galah Magazine adorn the pages of this bold, widely inspired coffee table book with rich stories of the happenings in regional Australia.

Annabelle's story is one fuelled by love. Her love of family, her love of creativity, her love of community and of course, her love of stories now changing the narrative of regional Australia. You simply need only sit in the room with Annabelle and you can feel the impact of her narrative and the positivity she shares with those who enjoy her company. Her energy is contagious and her creativity has fuelled the reinvention of the once sleepy town.

Whilst we were there, we thought it is only fair that we share our tips for a well-heeled weekend in the country.

White Cottage Flower Farm

Mandy Reid's flower farm is fast becoming an institution in Tenterfield. A flower farmer, a maker of seasonal bouquets and seller of beautiful French antiques, Mandy's cottage garden is a sanctuary of hard work and hive of creative inspiration. We participated in one of Mandy's floral workshops and highly recommend keeping an eye out for these via her Instagram page.

Simply Country Boutique

Carol Campbell's stylish country emporium has long anchored women's fashion on the high street in Tenterfield. Her lovely shop filled with timeless classics is a nod to quintessential country style. Carol has stocked Goondiwindi Cotton for over 16 years and is as charming as she is gorgeous.

Stonefruit

For the food and wine lovers, this chic regional restaurant is one to watch. With an emphasis on local and seasonal produce, Alistair Blackwell and Karlee McGee are weaving their magic on the Rouse Street gem following a tree change from the Sydney hospitality scene.

Paint Me White

For some time, we've followed the talented Sandy Palmer for her modern take on country interiors. Sandy's passion for recycling furniture and one off pieces is infectious and she owes this large part to the discovery of Annie Sloan paints in the UK many years ago. Today, Sandy's busy schedule includes management of the local caravan park alongside her husband, Tim, as well as the operation of her luxury Air BNB and her inspired retail store, Paint Me White.
